About Above Adventure: Above Adventure is a Kilmarnock based charity whose mission is to improve the health & wellbeing of our communities through sport and outreach.
The board is seeking new Trustees to join them on their exciting journey to open a state-of-the-art climbing and bouldering facility in the West of Scotland.
Trustees will be joining the organisation at an exciting time, with the bouldering centre due to open this year, and the full climbing facility in Spring 2022.
If you have expertise and energy to commit to a highly visible local project and a hard-working team, we’d love to hear from you. All applications are welcome, but the board is particularly keen to hear from Trustees who’ve had previous board experience or have skills in Financial Management, Project management, Fundraising or Business Development.
Hours: This position would suit someone with time to dedicate particularly in the early stages of the charity’s build and growth.
Board meetings are held monthly. At present, these are held online.
Sub-committee and other necessary meetings are also arranged as required.
Salary : Voluntary role. Reasonable expenses paid, in accordance with expenses policy.

We’re looking for enthusiastic, customer focused individuals with excellent communication skills to join our team as receptionists, instructors and duty managers. Availability to work evenings and weekends is essential, and for the instructor and duty manager roles, a climbing instructor qualification is also needed. A variety of part time contracts are available. RECEPTIONISTS: We are looking for lively and enthusiastic front of house staff members to join our team. The primary aim of the role will be to cover front of house responsibilities, but there will also be the opportunity to gain experience in multiple areas of the business. INSTRUCTORS: We are looking for motivated and experienced individuals to join our team as instructors. The successful candidates will be passionate about climbing and good customer service and keen to develop their skills within the industry. Pay: £9.50 per hour Hours: Various part-time hours available, with evening and weekend work included. Opportunities for additional hours may be available.
Responsibilities: • The role will involve instructing a variety of sessions, working reception and performing other duties as required to ensure we have a first class offering. • Being responsible for the health, safety & wellbeing of our customers on climbing sessions. • Ensure the highest levels of customer service and safety are maintained at all times
Essential skills/experience: • Hold relevant climbing instructor qualifications. Whilst CWI or RCI is a minimum we would consider those with ICA looking to progress in the industry. • Experienced, enthusiastic climber with varied instructing experience and a desire to share this with others • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills • Friendly and outgoing • Evening and weekend availability is essential
Desirable skills/experience: • Current first aid certificate • Coaching qualifications • Route setting experience • Experience in various social media channels • Experience of working with young people with disabilities and special needs • B+E or D1+E driving license
DUTY MANAGERS: We are looking for motivated and experienced individuals to join our team as duty managers. The successful candidates will be passionate about climbing and good customer service and keen to develop their skills within the industry. Pay: £10.50 per hour Hours: Various part-time hours available, with evening and weekend work included. Opportunities for additional hours may be available.
Responsibilities: The Duty Manager will take the lead on the day-to-day operations of the centre ensuring the safety and security of the facility, staff and customers. The Duty Manager will support the Centre Manager in all day-to-day procedures including building security, cashing up, centre cleanliness and staff administration. Duty Managers are a key reference point for staff and customers while on shift and are knowledgeable in all operations within the climbing centre. The successful individual will be responsible for maintaining the highest standards of safety and a great customer service.
Essential skills/experience: • CWI or RCI qualification as a minimum • Experienced, enthusiastic climber with varied instructing experience • Current first aid certificate • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills • Experience working in a fast-paced role • Friendly and outgoing • Proactive and able to work under own initiative • Evening and weekend availability is essential
Desirable skills/experience: • Experience in leading and inspiring a team • Coaching qualifications • Route setting experience • Cash handling experience • Experience of working with young people with disabilities and special needs • B+E or D1+E driving license

You may have noticed our contractors EMTEC have been very busy at the church lately
They have cleared and prepped the Bouldering Hall in preparation for works & wall installation.
Scaffolding has been completed and they are ready to start work on preserving and fixing the outside of the church.
We are reaching new heights this year as we start construction on East Ayrshire’s first Indoor Climbing Centre!
In 2020 we secured a total budget of over £3.3m to start work on the former Grange Church, turning it into a state of the art climbing and bouldering centre. This will produce many opportunities for the community by creating a sustainable enterprise, running apprenticeships, training programmes, providing permanent jobs and volunteer opportunities!
Our centre will be smashing the barriers of inclusivity! We will have areas/facilities for all no matter your age, ability, or needs.
In January, our newly appointed contractors Emtec have been carrying out refurbishments on the former church and hall building.
Our Outreach Programme “No Limit’s” was put on hold due to the Covid-19 Restrictions. However, in October 2020 we were able to get back up and running again. We have appointed our first Covid-Officer with the help of Sports Scotland! This allows us to ensure all measures are in place to safely run our programme.
We have made some slight adjustments such as smaller groups, following track and trace guidelines and wearing all relevant PPE. All these little changes are worth it once we see the children learned new skills, gain confidence, and have some normality back in their lives.
Due to the current restrictions our Outreach Programme is back on pause. We are taking this time to recruit new volunteers, attend additional training and engage with new groups to get involved once the restrictions are lifted!
We wanted to take this opportunity to update you on actions we’ve had to take as a charity, in response to COVID-19.
Firstly, it’s important to us that we recognise how fantastic our funders, supporters and beneficiaries have been in recent weeks when we’ve faced challenge. We extend our thanks to each and every person who likes our social media posts, follows our journey, volunteers with us, funds our projects and has attended our outreach sessions. Thank you for all you’ve done for the Above Adventure so far, we’re glad you’re on the adventure with us, even as we navigate this twist in our journey.
To protect the communities we work with, our volunteers and our instructors, we have sadly had to pause all of our outreach activities for the lockdown period. This complies with government social distancing guidance and puts the interests of the vulnerable young people we work with in particular, first. When it is safe for our outreach activities to recommence, we will share this news and details of how to get involved with you.
At present, the construction of our new state-of-the-art climbing facility is also paused, again due to government restrictions on the industry. Our two employees have been furloughed, but we look forward to welcoming them back soon. As soon as we have news of when construction can resume, we will share it with you.
